Hero Complex 0.6 is out!


Hello everyone!

Today is the release of 0.60, and wow what a ride! First of all, I'd like to give a big thanks to all the playtesters and everyone running Hero Complex so far. The feedback was vital to shape 0.60 and I'm really proud of the changes that have been made. 

Here's a detailed look below!

  • Combat Refinements
    • Characters hit harder and combat is much more lethal. Moment Modifiers have been doubled.
    • All the Conditions have been streamlined and given some extra tokusatsu flair. Conditions stack now. So if two characters inflict Burn to a target, Detonate will use all the stacks!
    • The amount of Universal Actions has been drastically reduced. Should lower the knowledge barrier to start playing the game.
    • All Forms, Types, and enemies are adjusted to these new changes.
  • Levelling Up
    • The max level has now been changed to 12 and characters may begin at level 0 (pre-transformation). Many players noticed that the first level is overwhelming – more than a dozen abilities with conditions and complex action economy! I’ve spread them out now. At level 2, your character will receive their Driver and (⚔) Special Action. There’s an added bonus to this change: Tables can start their campaigns pre-transformation and/or pre-driver! 
  • Narrative Changes
    • I noticed players were not using their Shadows too often. So to nudge people to use it more, Conviction and Edge now stack.
    • Secrets also got a much-needed touch up. They’ve been simplified and have now become an optional! Players do not need to start with them off the bat.
  • Corruption Rework
    • Corruption needed looking into for two reasons: First, was that there was a ton of bloat and there were too many finicky designs with it and different types had too similar symptoms. The second was that many players didn’t want to involve themselves with the system because of its penalties. The transformation from human to monster is vital for the experience so I didn’t want to remove the system. Corruption Symptoms are now universal, making it easier for bookkeeping and more interesting for flavor. Corruption Stages now level you up (so you’ll level faster than others), and will also give you Combat Feats and level up your Exotic Skills. Your max level doesn’t change, however, so those who hold on to their humanity should remain competitive with the fully-transformed players on the table. We’ll keep close eye on this one!
  • The Outsider - New Narrative Kit
    • Time management is vital to clearing investigations. Some groups may find it prudent to send one character instead of a Connection to certain scenes. That’s where the Outsider shines because they’re built with self-reliance in mind. They’re great for smaller groups or even single player games! The Outsider is an adjacent (or even rival) to the Ace and over time I hope to further differentiate these two.
  • The Luminary - New Combat Form
    • The alien exo-skeleton suit has arrived. With the new changes to Moment Modifiers, bringing in someone with gravity powers felt right. These alien drones protect their user and transform them into killing machines for the Moon Queen Mayari. They can transform to different roles, very similar to Revenant, but instead of changing Protocols every Round, they will only switch once or twice in a single combat.
  • Other Changes
    • There's a new Civilian enemy type. Might want to relax on more devastating abilities with these guys around!
    • A lot of general improvements across the board. I actually lost track!
